An escapement arranged in a casing between a continuously replenishable energy storage means 12, Fig. 1, and a driven member 19 to be moved impulsively and stepwise thereby, comprises an eccentric cam 28, Fig. 2, arranged to be moved continuously by a drive motor 1 for replenishing the energy storage means, the cam engaging an arrester member in the form of a carriage 17<SP>1</SP> to move it back and forth between stops 25 anchored to the casing, the carriage 17<SP>1</SP> having projections 17, 18 to engage guides 35, 36 on the driven member, and the guides being staggered with respect to each other by at least the width of one projection so that the projections on movement of the carriage spring from one guide to another and so allow of stepwise impulsive movement of the driven member. The latter has pins 22, Fig. 8, to engage teeth 23 on a cam plate 24 for actuating levers of a mechanism to be controlled. The means 12 consists of a strip tension spring which is continuously wound through a gear train 4 ... 11 from the motor 1 and urges shoulders 42, 47 at the ends of the guides 35, 36 into engagement with the projections 17, 15 until released by movement of the carriage. The cam 28 engages the sides of a rectangular recess 30 in the carriage, but may be shaped as shown in Fig. 3 to co -operate with lugs 43, 44 the position of which in the recess 30 determines the travel of the carriage. Fig. 4 shows a further construction of guides and projections in which edges 61 are equidistant from the shaft of the driving member so that the latter is subjected only to a pure turning movement when released by the projections.
