In the continuous casting of a rectangular sectioned bar in a mould 12 the scum floating on the surface of the molten metal is blown to the end walls 14 of the mould by jets 17 of inert gas, e.g. argon or nitrogen, so that the scum inclusions in the solidified bar occur at its edges only and can be removed without having to treat or condition the sides of the bar. The jets 17 may be preset before a casting operation by a plate (20) (Fig. 4, not shown) temporarily set into the mould (12) and having spot marks (21) (Fig. 3, not shown) thereon to which the jets 17 are aligned. |
