Novel esters of 1,5-dimethyltropine with pharmacological properties of the general formula wherein R is a direct bond, -CHOH or CHCH 2 OH, and the ester is in the cis or trans position in relation to the tropane skeleton, and Hal is a halogen atom, preferably chlorine, and the corresponding free bases thereof are prepared by reducing 1,5-dimethyltropinone and esterifying the resulting 1,5-dimethyltropine, or its acid addition salt, with the appropriate acid halide. 1,5-Dimethyltropinone is made by reacting an aqueous solution of acetonyl acetone, acetone dicarboxylic acid, sodium acetate and methylamine hydrochloride.
