1,268,253. Casting processes. M. P. SCHLIENGER. 2 May, 1969 [4 Oct., 1968], No. 22612/69. Addition to 1,240,547. Heading B3F. [Also in Division H5] Material 26 in a crucible 19 is melted by an electric arc established between a rotating wheel electrode 25 and the surface of the material. The wheel is of domed shape so that the arc is formed at its periphery and the latter is so placed as to be substantially equidistant from the surface of the melt at all points. It is cooled by water introduced through pipes 56, 55 and is driven by a motor 40. Fresh material 73 is introduced through an air lock 71 and shoot 70 and the base 20 of the crucible is gradually lowered by plunger 22 to maintain constant spacing between the wheel and the surface of the melt. The whole equipment is enclosed in a sealed housing 15 which may be evacuated or filled with inert gas and the crucible may be cooled by air or water in known manner, if desired. |
