Lactam synthesis - involving traces of halogens/hydrogen halides

In the prodn. of lactams by rearrangement of oximes with dil. H2SO4, the reaction may be made milder when traces of a halogen, e.g. I2, or H Hal are present. In an example 1 mol. cyclohexanone oxime was reacted at -15 to -30 degrees C with 0.3% H2SO4 and 0.01% Cl2.
