PURPOSE:To provide the light receiving device for the optical transmission system in which a light receiving output with a high level stable at all times is secured. CONSTITUTION:The system is provided with plural light receiving unit groups each of which plural photodetector units PD are arranged side by side and with changeover circuits 1A-1F and changeover circuits 2 by which one photodetector unit group is selected among the plural photodetector unit groups and a light receiving output is obtained from one photodetector unit among the plural light receiving units PD of the selected photodetector unit group. A scanning circuit 20 scans the plural photodetector units to search a photodetector unit having an optimum light receiving quantity. The changeover circuits 1A-1F and the changeover circuit 2 are switched so as to obtain a light receiving output from the photodetector unit having the optimum light receiving quantity based on the result of search.
