The hoist safety device uses a lifting cable tension detector actuating a 'lack-of-current' automatic brake. The hoist comprises a support frame for a cable drum (9), an electric motor (15) and its associated reduction gearbox (16), a hoisting cable (6) with an attached seat or cage, a drum (18) for a safety cable (19) which moves simultaneously with the hoist cable (6), and an automatic brake (17). The automatic brake operates if there is no current present in the motor or if the cable tension detector (6A) operates. To permit recovery of personnel in the event of supply failure, a hand wheel (22) is fitted to the end of the motor shaft.
