Gastro-resistant capsules are made from alginic acid or a water-insoluble alginate. The alginate is pref. that of Ca or Al. It is used with an adjuvant to increase its plasticity, such as gelatine, or if desired, gelatine capsules may be coated with the alginate. The capsules are prepd. from a water-soluble alkali-metal alginate by immersing moulds in the soln., and then into an acid or a soln. of a polyvalent metal salt. The moulds are then dried to leave a coating which forms half of the capsule case. The capsules are unaffected by gastric juices but break down rapidly in the intestine.
|
