PURPOSE: A method for displaying subtitles of a caption video cassette recorder in a stop state is provided to display a caption subtitles on a screen with a composite video signal continuously although a user slowly operates or stops a VCR by providing a field memory for temporarily storing each character data decoded in a caption module. CONSTITUTION: A remote controller(11) selects a function wanted by a user. A light-interception unit(12) receives an infrared rays signal transmitted from the remote controller(11). A CPU(13) senses the received infrared rays signal and controls a display of a function selected by the user. A caption module(14) displays a caption subtitles on a TV in accordance with a function selected by the remote controller(11) by a control signal of the CPU(13). A field memory unit(21) temporarily stores and outputs by one screen decoded character data out of the displays. The caption module(14) comprises a data slicer extracting caption data loaded in 21th line of simple number filed out of video signals outputted from the CPU(13), a processor decoding the extracted caption data and matching to the corresponding character stored in a ROM and storing in a RAM, the field memory(21) temporarily storing and outputting by one screen the decoded character data, an OSD element reading and displaying character data with the corresponding character signal of the RAM, and an analogue switch synthesizing the corresponding character signal and the existed composite video signal and outputting a composite video signal having caption data.
