PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose a method for producing iron oxide, in which the Mn content in an iron oxide solution is decreased effectively and iron oxide for a vivid red pigment can be obtained by a spray roasting method. SOLUTION: The method for producing iron oxide comprises the steps of: blowing an ozone-containing gas in the iron chloride solution containing HCl (a free acid) being 0.4-1.2 times as much as Fe<SP>2+</SP>by the molar number to adjust the pH of the solution to 1.5-3.5 and the oxidation-reduction potential thereof to 1.0-1.15 V; separating a precipitate produced in the resulting solution and removing the separated precipitate; and spray-roasting the precipitate-removed solution.
