PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent defective stack and delivery jamming from occurring by preventing a tab at the rear end of a paper sheet in the conveying direction from being overlapped with the front end of a paper sheet to be next conveyed when tab paper is conveyed and discharged. SOLUTION: This sheet conveying device capable of conveying, in order, tab paper and ordinary paper as documents to be read comprises an image reader for reading images on the tab paper and the ordinary paper, a first conveying device for conveying the tab paper and the ordinary paper before the images are read by the image reader, a second conveying device for conveying the tab paper and the ordinary paper after the images are read by the image reader, and a control device for controlling the image reader, the first conveying device, and a second conveying device. The control device discriminates whether or not the documents to be read are tab paper having a tab at the rear end in the conveying direction from the images read by the image reader. When it is determined that the documents are the tab paper having a tab at the rear end in the conveying direction, the conveying speed of the second conveying device is increased.
