A chain of bags supported on a conveyer belt 23 (Fig. 1) during filling and sealing is guided towards its upper end by V-belts 18 which hold the upper bag walls against the sides of a filling tube 20, and by V-belts 27 which take the weight of the bags while the upper margins are being heat-sealed. The chain of bags is formed by folding a strip of foil centrally and welding it transversely, the welds having perforations to facilitate separating the bags from the chain. In the form illustrated the bags are delivered to an elevator 31 which has transverse members 31a each of which engages the bottom of a bag to tear it upwardly from the chain so that it is conveyed on the elevator 31 bottom end first. An initial tear in each perforation is produced, before the bags are filled, by a toothed comb 34 which co-operates with a fixed yoke 33. The transverse welds do not reach the upper edge of the bag chain, so that the upper edges of the chain can be passed round the outside of the filling hopper 20. The hopper 20 delivers a weighed charge to each bag. The bag tops are sealed by reciprocating electrodes 22 which operate during the dwells in the intermittent movement of the bag chain. A photo-cell 16 detecting printed marks on the bag chain may control the intermittent motion. |
