[Also in Division A5] 2 - (2 - Hydroxy - 4 - methoxy - 5 - sulphobenzoyl) benzofuran and 2-(2-hydroxy-4- methoxy - 5 - sulphobenzoyl) 3 - methylbenzofuran and their salts, in particular their sodium, potassium, ammonium, monoethanolammonium, diethanolammonium or triethanolammonium salts, are prepared as novel compounds by sulphonating 2 - (2 - hydroxy - 4 - methoxybenzoyl) benzofuran and 2 - (2 - hydroxy - 4 - methoxybenzoyl) 3-methylbenzofuran respectively, and treating with base to obtain the salt. These compounds exhibit good U.V. absorption properties and can be incorporated in any of the cosmetic compositions customarily used for protecting the skin from U.V. light. |
