A straight chain poly(ethylene-1,2-diphenoxyethane - 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- dicarboxylate) is made by reacting a 1,2 - bis - para - carboalkoxy - phenoxyethane having an acid value of 0À03 or less with ethylene glycol in the presence of an ester interchange catalyst that is a strontium or barium salt of (i) a monocarboxylic acid having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or (ii) an orthoboric acid until alcohol no longer distils, and then polycondensing the product in the presence of an organotin catalyst of formula R m SnX (4-m/vx) , wherein R represents a C 1 -C 4 aliphatic radical, a C 3 -C 6 alicyclic radical or an aromatic radical, X represents -R, -OR, -OH, -SnR 3 , -O-C(R) = O, a halogen, = O, or (R as above, R<SP>1</SP> is a divalent radical similar to R), m is 1 to 4, Vx is the valence of the X radical and (4-m/Vx) is 0 to 3. |
