1-Arylamino-2-hydroxyanthraquinones (I), useful as dye intermediates, for phthaloyl-phenoxazine pigments, wool dyes, and anthraquinone ester of ether disperse dyes for synthetic fibres (where R is H or aryl; R1 is aryl; R2 is H, Cl, Br, OH aryloxy or SO3H, and R3 is H, OH, aryloxy, acyloxy, amine, alkyl cycloalkyl-, aryl- or acyl-amino, and further substituents are opt. present in one of 5-8-positions of anthraquinone structure) are prepd. by treating 1-amino-2-aryloxyanthraquinones (II) of formula (I); R1=H, 2-OH=2-OR1 in a polar organic solvent with basic catalysts at 25-220 degrees C. - Pref. solvents are DMSO, N-methyl pyrollidone and DMF; pref. base is NaOH or KOH; or Na or K acetate.
