Vanadium carbonitride and/or vanadium nitride material is prepd. by reacting a vanadium oxycarbide raw material in the presence of nitrogen and/or ammonia, opt. mixed with hydrogen, at a high temp. pref. 800 - 1250 degrees C. The products are used as steel alloying additives for providing vanadium opt. together with nitrogen. The process is economical.
