Reforming is carried out as in DT 2022076, extended to cover use of at least 2 successive reforming zones, with a reduced proportion of oxidising gas (steam and/orCO2). Part of the hydrocarbon charge is fed to the first zone and the remainder passed with the gas from the first zone through the succeeding zones. The ratio of oxidising gas/carbon in the first zone is at least 1.6:1 (and less than 2:1 if the gas is steam) while the ratio of oxidising gas/carbon in the total charge is less than 2:1. The gas emerging from each zone is mixed with fresh charge in amt. and at temp. necessary to give a mix temp. of at least 648 degrees C, (pref. 704-815 degrees C). The gas obtained consists of at least 80% hydrogen and CO in a ratio of 3:1 to 4:1, suitable for hydrocarbon synthesis or iron ore reduction without further treatment or re-heating.
|
