1411969 Electro-chemical analysis USS ENGS AND CONSULTANTS Inc 19 Dec 1972 [23 Dec 1971] 58610/72 Heading G1N In a solid electrolyte oxygen sensor a solid electrolyte block 4 is retained in a refractory tube 2 by a refractory cement 6. A reference electrode 8 of Cr-Cr 2 O 3 is located inside the tube 2 and a molybdenum contact rod 12 extends into the reference electrode, a refractory wool washer 10 or a layer of cement of the same type as layer 6 being provided to hold the solid electrolyte 4 in position. Alternatively, Fig. 2 (not shown) the washer 10 is dispensed with and a refractory cement is mixed with the reference electrode. By having a frustrum shaped part 14 of the solid electrolyte 4 extending into the reference electrode 8, when the cell is immersed in the liquid metal or hot gases to be tested the electrode 8 shrinks tightly round the frustrum 14 to maintain electrical contact. Also the cement layer 6 acts as a cushion between tube 2 and electrolyte 4 to eliminate fracturing of the quartz tube 2 or zirconia electrolyte 4. |
