PURPOSE:To improve collating accuracy without detecting the tip of a finger and with the use of the picture information of the finger by providing the generating means and comparing means, etc., of characteristic information to which a picture element value is added in the longitudinal direction and orthogonal direction of the picture information of the finger. CONSTITUTION:When the finger is abutted on the surface of a prism 11, and light is irradiated from a light source 12, the light is totally reflected or difused by the surface of the finger, and the density distribution corresponding to a fingerprint is generated..The variable density distribution is image-picked-up by a camera 13, converted into a digital signal by an A/D converting circuit 14, and the picture information of the finger quantized to a maltivalue is stored through a control part 15 into a picture memory 16. Next, the picture element value is added in the longitudinal direction and the orthogonal direction of the picture information stored into the memory 16, and the characteristic information of a one-dimensional array is generated. Then, the characteristic information is stored through a reader/writer 19 into a memory 18a of an IC card 18. In addition, by comparing the characteristic information with the characteristic information stored in a memory 17, the information including the that of a joint and other than the joint is collated, and the collating accuracy can be improved without detecting the tip of the finger. |
