The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1- 3 alkyl radical and R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy, C1- 3 alkoxy, amino, C1- 3 alkylamino, C2- 4 dialkylamino, hydroxymethyl-amino or acetylamino radical, and a process for their preparation comprising reacting an appropriate 4-methylpyrimidine with 5-nitrofurfural and, if desired, hydrolysing an amino or acylamino group in the 6-position or hydroxymethylating an amino group in the 6-position of the product to obtain a 6-hydroxy-, 6-amino or 6-hydroxymethylaminopyrimidine.
