[Also in Division C7] A ferrous piston ring is faced by plasma spraying a carbide of e.g. W, Ti, Ta, Nb, Mo, V, Cr, Zr, Hf, Si or B, the carbides being in solution in Co and alloyed in a matrix containing Ni and Cr. The ring may be cooled during sprayby a jet of inert gas. The facing may be sprayed into a peripheral groove in a compression ring or on to projecting beads or rails of oil control rings (Figs. 3, 4 and 5, not shown). |
