To extend the leg the valve is opened the piston rod withdrawn from the cylinder to the required extent, gas passing from compartment 90a to 90b, and the stem 76 released to close the valve and lock the leg in extended position. In modifications, the compressed gas is replaced by liquid e.g. hydraulic brake fluid, a conical valve member is displaced downwardly from its seat by pressure on the valve-operating rod, the weight of the table and causing increased fluid pressure in the lower compartment to hold the valve member normally in its seat, or the lower compartment is divided by a sliding partition into two parts the lower of which is filled with compressed air.
