A photo-sensitive print-out composition comprises a colour-forming component and a photoactivatable compound which reacts therewith to form a colour on exposure to light, said photoactivatable compound having the formula wherein R is C 1 -C 3 alkyl, or aralkyl in which the alkyl group contains 1-3C atoms; x is C 1 -C 4 alkyl, aralkyl in which the alkyl group contains 1-4 C atoms, or a C 1-4 alkyl group substituted by an acid group; Y is an anion unless x forms an intra-molecular salt with the N<SP>+</SP>, when Y is absent; Z is an atomic group necessary to form a heterocyclic ring which may carry a fused ring. A list of photo-activatable compounds includes thiazoles, selenazoles, oxazoles, imidazoles, and pyridines, which may carry fused benzene rings. A list of colour-forming compounds includes various aromatic nitriles, carbonyls, aldehydes and nitroso compounds, and amino and other nitrogen compounds. The composition may contain a sensitizer e.g. NaCl, CaCl 2 , KBr, NaF, AlF 3 , ZnF 2 , BaF 2 , Na 2 SO 4 , zinc lactate, lead stearate, sodium pyrinate, sodium hypophosphite, ammonium rhodamate, benzothiazole, benzoxazole, pyridine or quinoline; or a pigment e.g. TiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 or ZnO; or an optical sensitizer e.g. a cyanine, acridine or xanthene dye. The composition may be coated as a solution, which may contain a binder, on to a conventional support, or it may be powdered and rubbed into the surface of the support. The material is fixed by washing with a non-alcoholic solvent, or by heating to 100- 180‹C., in which case, the composition may contain a heat-fixing accelerator e.g. a nitrile, sulphite, hydrazine or hydroxylamine. |
