Milk substitute for the rearing and fattening of calves contains 21-45% powdered buttermilk and at most 50% skimmed milk powder, the sum of these two being 60-85%, 0.05-1% lysine and/or methionine, together with fats, minerals, etc. The mixture has the advantage of being lower in crude protein content than conventional milk substitutes, utilises buttermilk, which is a troublesome waste-product from the cheese-making industry, and gives as good or better, results as conventional feeds. The addition of lysine and/or methionine aids the assimilation of milk proteins. When added together they show a synergistic effect. |
