[Also in Division D2] In a roller comprising a cylindrical sleeve 10 of hard rubber or glass fibre rotatably supported on an axle 28 by at least three axially spaced apart bearings 20, 22 with spools 14, 18 supporting the sleeve between the bearings, at least one of the bearings is adjustable radially of the axle to eliminate longitudinal curvature of the sleeve 10 when the axle 28 bends under load. In the roller shown, for supporting the travelling wire mesh 12 in a paper-making machine, rigid collars 24 support the end bearings 20 on the axle 28. The intermediate bearings 22 are each supported by shoes 36, 38 pivoted to pistons 40, 42 extending from radial bores 48 in a block 46 secured within the axle. Individual lines 50 connect the bores 48 to closed bellows 52 at the end of axle 28. The bores 48, lines 50, and bellows 52 are filled with fluid, and screws 54 are turned to adjust the capacity of respective bellows, and hence the radial position of each piston. Each symmetrically spaced pair of bearings, and any odd bearings, will require individual sets of lines 50 and control bellows. With the roller normally loaded, the pistons 40 adjacent the mesh 12 are first adjusted to straighten the sleeve 10, the other screws 54 being slackened previously. Then the remaining pistons are adjusted to bring the remaining shoes into contact with the bearings. In Fig. 3 (not shown) elastomeric bags replace the shoes, pistons, and bores 48. In Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) the shoes (36, 38) are pivoted to tappets (70, 72) engaging cams (76, 74) respectively. Cam (76) is symmetrical about its axis of rotation, to move shoes (38) normal to the direction of the applied load on the roller. Cam (74) is asymmetric to its axis of rotation, to control the straightness of the sleeve. Individual shafts (78, 80) control the cams. |
