Process for preparing epsilon-caprolactam

A new large scale synthesis of epsilon-caprolactam (I) is effected by heating a soln. of pentamethylene-oxaziridin (cyclohexanon-is oxime, II) in an organic solvent contg. no active H atoms for the shortest possible time at 250-350 degrees, pref. 280-320 degrees. Alternatively, II is extracted from its soln. in an organic solvent with conc. H2SO4 and the soln. subjected to a Beckmann re-arrangement at 80-150 degrees.
