A high-tension cable 1 is surrounded by an insulating sheath 2, having its end conically tapered and provided with a tightly-overfitting conical sealing bell 3 of complementary bore. A pressure device, as shown, comprising a nut 6 and spring 7 may secure the bell 3 to the cable end. The sealing bell 3 may be cast in the form of a body of revolution and made of material of comparable dielectric constant to the sheath; both bell 3 and insulation 2 may be of polyethylene or P.V.C., and a rubber, a castable resin or a thermoplastic material may also be used for the bell, which may be coated at the lower end with a conductive material 8 such as graphite, connected to the cable screening 9. The bell may have ribs 4, may incorporate potential-controlling inserts and be fitted with a porcelain cap for external use. Co-operating bore surfaces may be treated with insulating liquid to eliminate air gaps. |
