1300227 Polymer blends ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 30 April 1970 [9 May 1969] 23776/69 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division C5] A polymer blend, suitable as a flow improver for oils, comprises (1) at least one polymer A having a plurality of substantially linear aliphatic hydrocarbon side chains each containing at least 18 carbon atoms, said side chains have been introduced by or after, the homo- or copolymerization of compounds containing a polymerizable group and (2) at least one polymer B which is a copolymer of ethylene and one or more ethylenically unsaturated compounds containing a double bond, such that it contains at least 50 mole per cent polymerized ethylene units, and in which if the copolymer B contains any substantially linear aliphatic hydrocarbon chains, these contain less than 18 carbon atoms. Polymer A is preferably obtained by the polymerization of compound containing an olefinically unsaturated bond. Polymer A may be an addition polymer or a condensation polymer such as a polyester polyamide or polyesteramide, and may be-prepared by homo- or copolymerizing compounds at least one of which contains a linear aliphatic hydrocarbon chain of at least 18 carbon atoms such as behenyl maleate, fumarate and methacrylate, or by reacting a preformed polymer with a compound containing such a chain (e.g. polyallyl alcohol or a copolymer thereof with styrene esterified with behenic acid, poly(meth)acrylic acid and copolymers thereof, and polymaleic anhydride, esterified with behenyl alcohol. The weight ratio of A to B is preferably from 1 : 5 to 5 : 1. In the examples blends are prepared of (1) A, a polyester of a C 30+ alkenyl suocinic anhydride, pentaerythritol and a mixture of C 20-22 fatty acids, with B, a copolymer of 72% wt. of ethylene with 28 wt. per cent vinyl acetate; (2) and (3) as in (1) but where B is also blended with A<SP>1</SP>, a copolymer vinyl acetate and behenyl fumarate, and A<SP>11</SP>, polystyrene acylated with behenic acid. The behenyl group contains 21 carbon atoms. |
