The sides of the snow chain are secured by a locking link (11) which has a large area circular or oval cross section open link (11) secured by a locking device. The link is large enough to accept two or three chain links without distortion, and with the locking link remaining flat on the wheel. The locking device has two locking pieces (18, 15), with one (18) formed by the shaped head of a securing bolt (16). The pieces lock into each other and into ends of the link to form a secure fitting. The lock is protected against wear by its flat profile on the tyre and by the large diameter of one of the locking pieces (15).
