In a method of producing a fibrous structure from a crude base comprising intermingled fibres of at least two types one of which is retractile compared to the other type or types, the fibres are softened and the retractile fibres caused to shrink whilst the base is free to contract in at least one of its major dimensions and to expand in the direction of its thickness. The softening of the fibres is preferably effected by means of water vapour at a lower temperature than the shrinkage temperature of the retractile fibres. The shrinkage of the retractile fibres may be effected by the action of heat e.g. water vapour. A binder may be incorporated in the base prior to the softening step; the binder may be fibrous, natural, synthetic or artificial and in the form of an emulsion, solution or a powder. The binder may be stabilised after the shrinkage step. As shown, an enclosure F forms a softening and shrinking tunnel for a fibrous base 10 while supported by an endless conveyor belt 1. The tunnel may be divided into compartments each of which is supplied with gaseous fluid at different temperatures and humidity. The conveyor belt 1 which may be plastics sheet material or metal fabric preferably has an inclined upper run, the base 10 moving down the incline during its passage through the tunnel. The conveyor belt 1 may be supported by heated rotary bars within the tunnel, and nip rolls may be provided at the entrance and exit openings of the tunnel (Fig. 2). |
