Olefinic hydrocarbons, e.g. C4-C10 olefines, are isomerized without formation of further branched chains by contacting the hydrocarbon with a solid phosphoric acid catalyst comprising phosphoric acid supported on a carrier of silica or metal oxide, e.g. alumina, titania, zirconia, magnesia or mixtures thereof, the solid phosphoric acid catalyst having been previously calcined at temperatures below 1100 DEG C., preferably for at least two hours, and, where the calcination temperature is below 700 DEG C., has subsequently been treated with water to remove water-soluble constituents and then dried. Silica may be in the form of diatomaceous earth, silica gel or pumice. The examples describe isomerization of butene-1 and 2-methyl-pentene-1 to form butene-2 and 2-methyl-pentene-2, respectively.ALSO:A solid phosphoric acid catalyst consisting of phosphoric acid deposited on a carrier of silica e.g. in the form of diatomaceous earth, silica-gel or pumice or deposited on a metal oxide e.g. alumina, titania, zirconia, magnesia or mixtures thereof, is calcined at temperatures below 1100 DEG C and when the temperature is below 700 DEG C is treated with water to remove water soluble constituents and the dried. |
