In a circular knitting machine with tubular needles a jack is provided with a stepped top to operate on the needle butt 5a and the needle slide butt 5d and a cam surface after the knitting station is radially relieved allowing the jack to move outwardly so that only the butt 5d is engaged. As shown in Fig. 6 the jack 1 is urged into contact with a cam 33A by a spring 7. Selection of the jacks is done by an electromagnet which acts on spring strips 21 one being provided for each jack. If the the strip 21 is attracted by the electromagnet it is put outside a cam 27 (28) and the jack is urged by spring 7 into operation, if it is not attracted the jack is urged by the strip 21 out of contact with the cam 3BA (dot-dash position Fig. 6). When the jack rises it lifts both parts of the needle with its stepped top and after the yarn has been fed the jack moves outwardly into the relieved part 36f of cam 36 under the action of spring 7 so that the top step engages only the butt 5d thus holding it while the needle hook is moved down by a further cam (not shown). The jack then moves inwardly and all three parts are moved down to their initial position. |
