<p>1332021 Plasticized interpolymer compositions MONSANTO CO 1 Jan 1971 [2 Jan 1970] 82/71 Heading C3P A plasticized interpolymer composition comprises (A)(i) an interpolymer of ethylene, vinyl chloride and a polar monomer component which is at least partly acrylamide, x% by weight of the interpolymer (where x is from 0À1 to 10) being derived from the polar monomer component, from 2 to (70-x)% by weight of the interpolymer being derived from the ethylene and from 30 to 88% by weight of the interpolymer being derived from the vinyl chloride, or (ii) an interpolymer derived by the partial or complete hydrolysis of the amide groups of the interpolymer of type (i), and (B) a plasticizer compatible with the interpolymer. The hydrolysis in type (ii) may be effected by treating an aqueous dispersion or polymer latex of the interpolymer with aqueous base or acid, e.g. an alkali metal hydroxide, quaternary ammonium hydroxide, HCl, H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 or H 3 PO 4 . Several types of polar monomers which may be used in addition to acrylamide are specified and such monomers especially include hydroxyethyl acrylate, N- isopropyl acrylamide, diammonium itaconate, monobutyl acid maleate, N-methacrylyl propionamide, sodium acrylate and sodium methacrylate. The compatible plasticizer may be one of several specified types of aliphatic mono- (or poly-) carboxylic acid esters, phosphate esters, sulphonamides, hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, epoxy esters, glycidols, glycidyl ethers, and polyesters terminated by residues of various monocarboxylic acids or alcohols. The plasticized interpolymer is useful as a pigment binder for coating cellulosic substrates, e.g. paper or paperboard. It may be applied as an aqueous composition which may contain, in addition to the plasticized interpolymer and pigment, another binder, e.g. a starch, ethylene oxide modified starch, casein or other proteinaceous material and other conventional ingredients especially polyethyleneimine, ureas, urea-formaldehyde resins, zinc oxide, melamine resins and melamine-formaldehyde resins. The plasticized interpolymer compositions are also useful as protective coatings for wood, metal,and glass, as laminating adhesives for safety glass, as wrapping films and sheeting and as protective bumper extensions and caps. When used for coating wood, metal or glass they can be applied as an organic solvent solution or in the form of an aqueous dispersion optionally containing pigments and dyes.</p> |
