A projection display apparatus which automatically corrects brightness and a method of controlling the same are provided to maintain an image with uniform brightness irrespective of time for which a lamp is used. A projection display apparatus(301) includes a storage unit(308), a controller(307), and a brightness compensator(306). The storage unit stores a lookup table representing brightness signal input values and brightness signal output values corresponding to the brightness signal input values according to a lamp utilization time. The controller determines a brightness signal output value corresponding to an inputted brightness signal on the basis of the current lamp utilization time with reference to the lookup table. The brightness compensator outputs the brightness signal output value determined by the controller to display an image with corrected brightness.
