An empty beam placed on rollers 16 is lifted by a hydraulic ram 24 acting through levers 18, and engaged by a head stock 6 and a tail stock 8 moved along rails by rams 106, 108. During winding, the rollers 16 serve as presser rollers. The beam is driven by a hydraulic motor 28 supplied by a variabledisplacement pump whose output is controlled to keep the yarn speed constant. The speed is sensed by a tachometer driven by nip rollers 48 through which the warp is fed to the beam. When the yarn speed changes, a disc 56 is turned by the tachometer 52 to bring one or other of two slots 58, 60 opposite an outlet port 78 or 80; corresponding inlet ports on the opposite side of the disc receive low pressure compressed air from an inlet 68. Each outlet 78, 80 leads to a pneumatically-operated valve feeding high pressure air to a pneumatic motor, which rotates one way or the other depending on which valve is opened; the motor adjusts the delivery of the pump supplying the beam driving motor 28. Restrictors in the valves limit the air flow and hence the acceleration of the beam motor, especially when standing from rest; the pump is automatically adjusted to zero delivery whenever the beam drive is stopped. The desired yarn speed can be set by swinging the head 64 about the axis of the disc 56. |
