The saturated salt solution used for regenerating a water softener is supplied in a predetermined quantity which is smaller than the volume of liquid which can be contained in the softener and is left in contact with the exchanger so as to be displaced by a supply of fresh water to be treated in the next treatment cycle of the exchanger.
