1,221,432. Unsaturated polyester-amide resins. SCHERING A.G. 13 Dec., 1967 [13 Dec., 1966; 28 Oct., 1967], No. 56642/67. Heading C3P and C3R. Polyester-amide resins are prepared by reacting at an elevated temperature (A), (i) an aliphatic polymeric fatty acid or (ii) a C 12 or higher adduct or copolymer of an unsaturated fatty acid and an α,#-unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid, or (iii) an aliphatic acid (C 17 H 34 COO)(CH 2 ) x COOH where x is 0, 1 or 2, or an ester of any such acid, with (B), (i) an alkanolamine containing a C 2-10 alkylene group and 1 primary or alkyl-substituted secondary amino group, and/or (ii) a mixture of an aliphatic di-primary and/or secondary amine and a diol in an equivalence ratio of hydroxyl plus amino : carboxy between 1À2 : 1 and 2 : 1, the resulting reaction product being reacted with maleic anhydride. Reactant (A) may also include up to 40 equivalent per cent of a lower dicarboxylic acid. Various suitable reactants are specified. The resins are stated to be soluble in numerous solvents. The polyester-amides may be copolymerized with unsaturated comonomers such as styrene, divinyl benzene, chlorostyrene, acrylates, methacrylates or allyl esters, using free radical catalysts such as peroxides and the accelerators, pigments and fillers such as glass fibres conventionally used with unsaturated polyester resins. |
