PURPOSE:To efficiently produce metallic Si, by providing an opening communicating with the inside and outside of a barrel to the side periphery at the lower end of the barrel for supplying a raw carbonaceous material above an arc furnace to smoothly supply the raw carbonaceous material to the ignition region. CONSTITUTION:Arc electrodes 3 and 4 are inserted into the inside of the casing 2 of the arc furnace 1 lined with graphite or a graphite crucible so that the tips of both electrodes are confronted with each other, a nozzle 5 for injecting SiO2 or SiO is inserted from the side of the furnace casing 2, and the raw material supply barrel 6 pierced with the holes 8 communicating with the inside and outside at the lower end is inserted from the furnace top side to above the confronting position of the electrodes 3 and 4. The raw carbonaceous material is supplied from the barrel 6, SiO2 or SiO is supplied from the nozzle 5, metallic Si is formed by the arc generated between the electrodes 3 and 4, the formed gaseous SiO is allowed to flow into the barrel 6 through the openings 8, and the raw material B is supplied to the ignition region while the gaseous SiO is allowed to react with SiC and decomposed.
