PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new trans-3-hydroxy-4-phenylthiotetrahydrofuran which is an intermediate for producing 1-butyne-3,4-diol which is a compound useful as a raw material for medicines and agrochemicals. SOLUTION: This trans-3-hydroxy-4-phenylthiotetrahydrofuran is represented by formula I. Optically active (3S, 4S) and (3R, 4R) substances exist in the compound of formula I. The compound of formula I is obtained by epoxidizing dihydrofuran of formula II using a peroxide to convert it to an epoxy compound of formula III and reacting the epoxy compound of formula III with an alkali metal phenylthiolate. The optically active trans-3-hydroxy-4- phenylthiotetrahydrofuran is obtained by reacting trans-3-hydroxy 4- phenylthiotetrahydrofuran which is a recemate with a lipase in the presence of an esterifying agent, stereoselectively subjecting either one tetrahydrofuran to transesterification reaction and taking out the other unreacted alcohol substance. |
