The discharge valve assembly includes a valve stop having a natural frequency and a valve member movable into engagement with the stop and having a tip and a root with a free length between. The valve stop has a profile starting at the root and having a first portion which is of an increasing radius and which transitions into a second portion which is of a decreasing radius. The second portion has a radius less than the first portion at a point corresponding to 90 per cent of the free length. Engagement between the valve member and stop takes place over an entire opening movement of the valve, maximising the duration of, and minimising the amount of, kinetic energy transfer from the valve member to the stop.
