Before densification by the ceramic matrix, the material constituting the carbon fibre-based reinforcement is subjected to a heat treatment in a nonoxidising medium, for example in vacuum, at a temperature which is preferably higher than 1300 DEG C and lower than 2200 DEG C, to act on the bonding between the fibres and the matrix in order to improve the mechanical properties of the composite material.
