Extrusion apparatus, suitable for hydrostatically extruding a billet 39 against back pressure, includes a main body 1 comprising cylinders 2 and 3, and a stepped piston 8 having a head 10 slidable in cylinder 2 and a neck 11 slidable in cylinder 3, the piston including an extrusion chamber 9 housing a fluid enveloped billet 39, an extrusion die 16, and a plunger 14. Downward movement of a main ram 7 pressurizes fluid 4 in the cylinder 2 and, by means of a head 15 of the plunger 14, fluid in the extrusion chamber 9. The piston 8 is simultaneously forced downwardly to pressurize fluid 40 in the cylinder 3, the billet beng extruded and guided into a container 24 in the cylinder against back pressure exerted by the fluid. The ram 14 may act directly on the end of the billet in the conventional manner to extrude the billet mechanically against a back pressure. |
