Spray-dried wheat starch is etherified without gelatinization by suspending it in water and adding to the suspension sodium chloride and diethylaminoethyl chloride hydrochloride and then propylene oxide. The mixture is agitated at 30 DEG C. for 16 hours, then acidified with phosphoric acid, centrifuged, washed and spray-dried.ALSO:A paper contains, uniformly distributed among its fibres a cationic hydroxyalkylstarch ether of the formula: <FORM:1067692/D1-D2/1> where X is starch, R1 is alkylene or hydroxyalkylene, R2 and R3 are alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or heterocycloalkyl and R4 is hydroxyalkyl. The ether is in the gelatinized state when used in making the paper, but gelatinization is avoided during the preparation of the ether. The ether may be added to the fibrous slurry from which the paper is made. The preferred ether is diethylaminoethyl-hydroxypropylstarch, but several others are referred to. Other additives may be used with the starch ether, e.g. rosin-alum size, a filler e.g. kaolin, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate or talc, a pigment, a dye, a wax emulsion or a latex emulsion. The paper may be corrugated. |
