A road vehicle wherein the battery 14 is charged by a generator 11 is provided with a warning lamp to indicate when the battery is being charged, the warning lamp being connected in series with a transistor oscillator across the battery terminals. When the vehicle ignition switch is closed the oscillator constituted by the transistor 21, diode 18, resistor 17, capacitor 23 and windings 19, 24 of a saturable magnetic device 16 operates at a frequency which is high enough to ensure that the lamp 22 appears to be continuously illuminated. As the generator 11 starts to charge the battery 14 the device 16 becomes magnetized by virtue of the winding 15 and the increasing charging current causes the amplitude of the oscillations to be reduced thus dimming the lamp 22 until when the device 16 is saturated, and no further coupling between windings 19, 24 the lamp 22 is extinguished. |
