1,164,175. Coated fabric. INTERCHEMICAL CORP. 2 Aug., 1967 [2 Aug., 1966], No. 35573/67. Heading B2E. A fabric is coated with a first layer of a flexible thermoplastic synthetic resinous composition, and a second layer of a flexible thermoplastic synthetic resinous composition is applied to the first layer or to the other side of the fabric, the first layer having a temperature of total fusion at least 20‹F below the temperature at which the second layer will exhibit the property of a plastic memory, and the first layer being of sufficient thickness to hold the entire coated fabric in a desired configuration after vacuum forming. The coated fabric may be vacuum formed by heating it to the point where it loses its rigidity, positioning it in contact with a mould and evacuating the region between the coated fabric and the mould and so controlling the heating of the fabric that the first layer of composition is at a temperature at least substantially as high as its temperature of total fusion, while the second layer is not heated to a temperature sufficiently high for its plastic memoryto cause any appreciable physical change in the layer. The exposed surface of the second layer of composition can be embossed and the coated fabric can be vacuum formed without destroying any embossing present. The fabric may be made of cotton, wool, silk, nylon, polypropylene, acrylic, modified acrylic fibres and can be woven, knitted or non-woven. Non-woven fabrics can be formed by bonding the textile fibres by a vinyl latex. Examples of synthetic resins which - can be used include polyvinyl chloride or copolymers thereof, chlorinated polyethylene resins. Plasticisers, lubricants, fillers, dyes, pigments, stabilisers can be incorporated into the synthetic resins. Examples of suitable plasticisers, stabilisers, lubricants and fillers are given. The synthetic resin may be applied to the fabric by extrusion, dip-coating, spraying, calendering, knife coating, fluidised bed coating. The coated fabric may be finished with a vinyl/acrylic lacquer. The first layer may comprise a plurality of layers of resinous materials applied sequentially. Uses for the coated fabrics mentioned are as upholstery materials for furniture, automobile seats, convertible tops, machinery covers, boat seats, and for wall coverings. |
