The invention relates to a device and to a method for recovering heat energy conveyed by waste water in order to preheat water for consumption. The recovery device is characterised in that it comprises a plurality of tanks 11, 12, 13, selective distribution means 14-30 which distribute the waste water according to its temperature into the tanks and pipework conveying the water for consumption through these tanks 11, 12, 13 so that the direction of flow of the sanitary hot water is established from the tank containing the coldest waste water 13 towards the tank containing the hottest waste water 11.
