A roof structure in the form of a dome for a large building such as an athletics stadium, capable of being opened partially depending on environmental conditions, such as atmospheric weather conditions. The roof structure in the form of a dome comprises a stationary roof section which has a central opening and is secured in a fixed manner along an outer periphery thereof to the side wall of the large building, and a movable roof section which comprises a plurality of roof units which correspond to a plurality of divisions of the central opening and each one is capable of being moved radially between an open position in which the roof unit is supported on the stationary roof section and a closed position in which the roof unit is supported on a beam in the central opening. According to the invention, a method is also provided for constructing the stationary roof section of the aforesaid roof structure which can be opened.
