Roll-forming apparatus for continuous or interleaved webs

A roll-forming apparatus (10) is disclosed which forms individual rolls of material from continuous or interleaved webs. The apparatus includes a conveyor (16) which directs each web of material to an associated intermittently indexed turret assembly (18). The turret assembly includes a plurality of rotatable spindles (20) thereon for respective formation of rolls of material from the individual webs. The apparatus includes various drive arrangements so that the surface speed of each spindle is matched to the speed of the apparatus conveyor during transfer of each web to a respective one of the spindles. Separate drive systems are preferably provided for effecting driven rotation of each spindle during winding of the rolls, and for effecting intermittent, indexed movement of the turret assembly. An additional drive mechanism desirably effects reverse rotation of each spindle to facilitate removal of the completed roll therefrom. <IMAGE>
