The invention relates to devices and methods for regulating a generator with a dedicated voltage transformer working as step-up converter, wherein regulation of the generator is effected depending on its rotational speed and/or the speed-dependent output voltage of the generator. Three different ranges are defined in which different types of regulation can be carried out. In case of low rotational speed, output regulation is effected at a maximum admissible excitation current. In case of higher rotational speeds, voltage is regulated by influencing the excitation current. In case of overvoltage during higher rotational speeds and sudden load reduction, a third regulation strategy is implemented which reduces overvoltage and the excitation current.
