PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an igniter for an internal combustion engine facilitating the assembling of an ignition coil and eliminating any possibility of a short circuit between a primary and a secondary coil of the ignition coil. SOLUTION: This igniter comprises the ignition coil 1 and an ignition unit 2. The end 1b1 of a winding start side of the secondary coil 1b of the ignition coil 1 is connected to a low-voltage side secondary terminal metal fitting 114 fitted to a secondary bobbin 110. A printed circuit board 202 of the ignition unit 2 is provided with a secondary coil earth electrode 207, an earth terminal electrode 206 connecting an earth wire guiding to the outside, and an earth pattern 212 connecting the secondary coil earth electrode 207 and the earth terminal electrode 206. The low-voltage side secondary terminal metal fitting 114 is directly soldered to the secondary coil earth electrode 207 for the printed circuit board.
